the Legend of Jow-Lung

The

Legend

of

Jow Lung

The Legend of Jow Lung is a graphic novel that retells the life and struggles of the founder of Jow Ga Martial Arts, the legendary Kung Fu Master, Jow Lung. Jow Lung, along with his four brothers, Jow Hip, Jow Biu, Jow Hoy , and Jow Tin, created the Jow Ga system in the early days of 20th Century China as a means of physical, spiritual and social discipline in response to the economic devastation and social decay brought about by Western colonization and the Opium Wars of the early 1900's.

The Legend of Jow Lung is written for younger audiences, but retains the historical accuracy needed to tell this story fully. Written by Jow Ga Master, Abdur-Rahim Muhammad, and illustrated by martial arts student and cartoonist, Clay Harris, The Legend of Jow Lung is written in mind for the youth of inner-city communities who face social challenges similar to those faced by Jow Lung himself when he started his training. Abdur-Rahim Muhammad is also the president and founder of the Hung Tao Choy Mei Leadership Institute, a martial arts school and community organization based in Washington, DC. It is the goal of the Hung Tao Choy Mei Leadership Institute to promote the values and disciplines of Jow Ga that can constructively apply to today's communities here in America. In Jow Lung's time, China had fallen prey to rampant economic exploitation from Western occupation, gang violence that soon escalated into civil war, as well as the crippling devastation of opium addiction that plagued nearly all of Asia in the start of the 20th Century. It is in this context that The Legend of Jow Lung was written. Poor communities of color throughout America face the same kind of obstacles today. It is the stated purpose of publishing The Legend of Jow Lung in order to inspire the youth in these communities by studying and appreciating the life and successes that Jow Lung achieved in his short life.
